A former minister sentenced to jail

The magistrates of the Chisinau Court of Appeal issued the conviction decision of the former Minister of Transports and Roads Infrastructure Iurie Chirinciuc to three years and six months imprisonment with execution for influence and abuse of service.

According to a statement of the General Prosecutor's Office, on the evening of May 15, the Chisinau Court of Appeal examined the parties' appeals against the sentence of the first instance, by which he had been sentenced to a non-custodial sentence.

Thus, for traffic of influence and abuse of service, the former minister was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment, with execution, with the deprivation of the right to exercise public office for 5 years.

Also yesterday, the same court aggravated the punishment of a businessman, who was an accomplice to the former minister in committing trafficking in influence, and sentenced him to two years in prison.

However, the court rejected the prosecutor's request for the extended state-owned confiscation of the luxury automobile belonging to the former minister and the financial means worth 40,000 lei and 5,500 euros - sums raised during the search made at the businessman's home.

The decision is enforceable, but with a right of appeal to the Supreme Court of Justice.
