A businessman, detained after trying to bribe an ANSA employee

A businessman was reported to the National Anticorruption Center (CNA) by an employee of the National Agency for Food Safety (ANSA) after he tried to bribe him with 50,000 lei. According to the whistleblower, the money was offered to him in order to overlook several irregularities related to the execution of a project regarding the vaccination of foxes against rabies, executed by the businessman's company.

According to a CNA press release, following an auction organized by ANSA, the economic agent won the project, in which he purchased a rabies vaccine for the fox vaccination campaign. After the vaccination was completed, the ANSA employee was to draw up a report on the execution of the works and the distribution of the entire quantity of vaccine, and the economic agent to collect the money for the services.

However, in the process of spraying the vaccine, over 20,000 doses would have missed the target and would have reached lakes or localities. Therefore, this amount of vaccine, worth more than 20,000 euros, had to be excluded from the amount to be collected by the economic agent in the project. In order not to lose this money, the businessman would have proposed to the ANSA employee 50,000 lei bribe in order to falsify the final report of receiving the services and not to include the missed amount of vaccine.

Following the denunciation of the ANSA employee, a criminal case was initiated for active corruption. The businessman was detained and escorted to the CNA for interrogations, after which he was placed in solitary confinement for 72 hours. If found guilty, he faces up to six years in prison with a fine of 2,000 to 4,000 conventional units.
