International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, marked in Chisinau

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was also marked in Chisinau. On this occasion, the Parliament building was illuminated last night in orange, which, according to the organizers, is a sign of unity and hope for a better life. For 16 days, the Legislative building, but also other institutions that joined this campaign, such as the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State University, will illuminate their buildings in orange, Moldova 1 reports.

Data from the National Coalition "Life without Domestic Violence" show that in the Republic of Moldova, since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, all types of violence against women and girls, especially domestic violence, are on the rise.

"The figures speak of an increase of 30-35%, other organizations speak of doubling these complaints. In particular, girls and women who are particularly vulnerable, women with disabilities, poor girls and women, those with children who have lost their jobs have been affected," said Veronica Teleuca, a representative of the National Coalition "Life Without Violence in Family".

The country's top leadership has expressed support for the "Choose a Life Without Violence" campaign.

"We are launching 16 days of activism against gender-based violence. Every victim is a drama, it is our common drama, violence must not be tolerated, it must be eliminated once and for all. Every citizen must be sure of his security wherever s/he is", mentioned the President of the Parliament, Zinaida Greceanii.

"Preventing and combating gender-based violence is a major concern of the Government, and our country is firmly committed to developing national mechanisms to prevent and combat gender discrimination, empower women and girls and ensure their safety and security," said Prime Minister Ion Chicu.

According to representatives of the United Nations (UN) in the Republic of Moldova, the key call for this campaign is to end violence against girls and women.

"The United Nations has been supporting this 20-year campaign in the Republic of Moldova, and what we all want is to eliminate the phenomenon of violence against girls and women around the world, and we must understand that this will only be possible when the attitude ours will change in the face of this scourge," said Simon Springett, UN representative in Moldova.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women was established in 1981 and is marked annually on November 25 around the world.
