EBRD will grant the Republic of Moldova 25 million euros for solid waste management

The solid waste management infrastructure will be developed with the financial support of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The Government approved on Wednesday, November 23, the signing of the Loan Agreement, in the amount of 25 million euros, for the implementation of the "Solid waste in the Republic of Moldova" project.

According to the Government, after the ratification of the Agreement, the first waste management infrastructure will be developed in the RMD5 region, which includes Ungheni, Nisporeni and Călăraşi districts. Work on a modern waste management site, according to European standards, will begin in 2023.

The objective of the project is the construction of solid waste management infrastructure and the procurement of equipment and machinery for transport, sorting, recycling, composting, such as: dumpsters and containers for waste collection (from door to door and collection points), vehicles for collection and waste transportation, construction of sorting, composting and transfer stations. The program also provides for the liquidation of over 1,600 unauthorized dumpsites.

Also, infrastructure works will follow in RMD 8 - Edineţ, Donduşeni, Ocniţa, Briceni districts; RMD 1 – Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia districts, as well as in Gagauzia UTA (Comrat, Vulcăneşti and Ceadâr-Lunga).

The "Solid waste in the Republic of Moldova" project was developed in the context of the commitments assumed by the Republic of Moldova in the field of sustainable development. Following the negotiations of the Loan Agreement, our country will contribute to the achievement of the performance indicators for Sustainable Development Objective 11 "Sustainable cities and communities".

The project will be implemented in the period 2023-2027, the term of validity of the Agreement being up to 15 years, with a grace period of four years.
