The external debt of the Republic of Moldova is 64 percent of GDP

The gross external debt of the Republic of Moldova decreased insignificantly during the first quarter, by 0.3 percent and totaled 8 billion 986.79 million US dollars, which is 64 percent of GDP.

According to the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), most of the gross foreign debt balance is in long-term debt (69.2%), which amounted to over $ 6.2 billion as of March 31, 2022, 0.8% since the beginning of 2021. Short-term external debt increased by 0.8% during the first quarter of this year and on March 31 amounted to over $ 2.7 billion.

At the same time, public external debt accounted for 29.8 percent of total external debt, totaling about $ 2.7 billion, down by 1.9 percent since the beginning of the year. Private external debt amounted to $ 6,308.84 million, up by 0.4 percent from the beginning of this year.
