The European Parliament voted to liberalise exports of agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova to the EU
The European Parliament voted today, July 5, the liberalisation of exports of agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova on the European Union market. According to the Romanian MEP, Siegfried Muresan, the proposal of the European Commission to double, for one year, the export quotas for 7 categories of agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova was voted by 572 deputies, 28 were against and 32 abstained.
"We just voted in the plenary of the European Parliament, by a large majority - 572 votes in favour, 28 against and 32 abstentions, the proposal of the European Commission to double, for one year, the export quotas to 7 categories of agricultural products from the Republic of Moldova for which tariff quotas are still applied when entering the European Union market," the Romanian official wrote on his Facebook page.
The MEP reported that the war in Ukraine severely affected farmers in the Republic of Moldova, blocking exports of agricultural products to Eastern countries, and today's vote shows the solidarity of the European Parliament with farmers and citizens of our country.
"We have repeatedly asked the European Parliament to liberalise exports of agricultural products from Moldova to the European Union market. I requested this, including in the Resolution on the Republic of Moldova, which I initiated and which was adopted by the plenary of the European Parliament on 5 May. The European Union is already the main trading partner of the Republic of Moldova. I want the measure voted today not to remain a temporary one and to be a new step towards the integration of the Republic of Moldova in the European single market," added Siegfried Muresan.
TRM.MD recalls that, at the beginning of June, the European Commission came up with a proposal for a regulation to double, for a year, the export quotas, ie the volume of goods for which no customs duties are applied, to the 7 products for which they are still applied tariff quotas: tomatoes, garlic, table grapes, apples, cherries, plums and grape juice. Of these, Moldova exports plums and grapes in large quantities to Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.
Currently, almost two thirds of Moldovan exports are going to the European market.
