Landslides in India, there are casualties and missing people

At least 14 people died on Thursday and another 50 are missing after a huge landslide occurred in an isolated region of Manipur, a state in northeastern India, local Indian authorities said, Reuters reported.

Rescue crews faced torrential rains and inclement weather to pull more survivors out of the rubble after a landslide occurred on a railway site in the early hours of Thursday. The army has been called upon to join search and rescue operations, but officials are not optimistic.

"The chances of finding survivors are very low, given that the landslide occurred around 2:00," Haulianlal Guite, a Noney district magistrate in Manipur, told Reuters, Agerpres was quoted as saying.

The search operations will continue overnight, according to an Indian army statement.

The unprecedented rains that fell this month in the northeastern states of India and neighboring Bangladesh have already killed more than 150 people.

Several million more have been displaced by catastrophic floods in recent weeks, and in some lower areas many homes have been completely flooded.
