Israel bombards the Gaza Strip for the second day (VIDEO)
Israel is bombing the Gaza Strip for a second day in a "preemptive operation" and the Palestinian armed group is firing rockets at the Jewish state, in the worst bout of local violence since a brief war last year. The strikes began on Friday afternoon and, according to the Israeli authorities, are particularly targeting weapons manufacturing sites. The Israeli military estimates it has killed 15 Islamic Jihad fighters. At the same time, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported ten deaths, including children, and 79 wounded, reports Moldova 1.
Israel's prime minister said a "counter-terrorist operation" was underway against Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza after airstrikes killed at least 15 people in the enclave. The Israeli military warns that this latest operation, codenamed Breaking Dawn, will last as long as necessary, and the government has a zero-tolerance policy for any attempted attack from Gaza against Israel.
"Israel conducted a precise counter-terrorist operation against an immediate threat. Our fight is not with the people of Gaza. Islamic Jihad is an Iranian proxy that wants to destroy the state of Israel and kill innocent Israelis. The head of Islamic Jihad is in Tehran as we speak. We will do whatever is necessary to defend our people," said Yair Lapud, Israel's prime minister.
"We proactively launched Operation Breaking Dawn against Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip to neutralize the threat to Israeli communities and citizens around the Gaza Strip," said Benny Gantz, Israel's Ministry of Defense.
According to the Israeli army, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad launched approximately 80 rockets towards the south of the country. However, almost half of them fell in the Gaza Strip. TRM.MD recalls that the 11-day war in May 2021 left more than 200 Palestinians and many more Israelis dead before a ceasefire agreement was reached.
