Jens Stoltenberg: NATO plans to massively increase the number of rapid reaction forces

NATO has said it plans to massively increase the number of its highly trained forces to more than 300,000 troops, according to BBC.

The bloc's rapid reaction force currently has 40,000 soldiers at its disposal, many of them concentrated on the eastern flank of the alliance. Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the increase comes as a result of a direct threat from Russia to European security.

The official mentioned that the "new military plan" will "drastically improve" the bloc's eastern defence.

Jens Stoltenberg said several NATO fighting groups in Eastern Europe would be supported at the "brigade level" - tactical units of several thousand soldiers - which the bloc's civilian leader said were aimed at sending a clear message of discouragement to Russia.

"I am confident that Moscow, President Putin, understands our collective security guarantees, understands the consequences of the attack on a NATO ally," Stoltenberg told reporters at a news conference in Brussels.

TRM.MD recalls that the leaders of the 30 NATO member states are meeting, starting with Tuesday, in Madrid, for discussions within what many expect to be the most important summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation in the last decades.

NATO was established in 1949 by North American, European and Nordic states to join forces in the event of an attack by the Soviet Union. The alliance has since expanded its membership and responsibilities, and after the dissolution of the USSR in the early 1990s, it became involved in military operations - from peacekeeping to training and fighting - in the Balkans, Africa and the Middle East.
