Russia could turn off the gas tap completely. Europe must 'act now'

Russia could completely cut off gas supplies to Europe as it seeks to strengthen its political influence amid the Ukraine crisis, said the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA), who warned that Europe must now take action, Reuters reports.

"I would not rule out that Russia will continue to find different problems here and there and find excuses to further reduce gas deliveries to Europe and maybe even interrupt them completely," said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

"That's why Europe needs emergency plans," Birol added, saying the recent reduction in flows may be an attempt to gain political influence before winter comes, when demand is higher.

The IEA does not consider a total power outage to be the most likely scenario, he added. Russia has already turned off the gas tap for several European countries after refusing to pay in rubles.

"Gazprom" cut deliveries to Orsted in Denmark and to Shell Energy in Germany, as well as to Dutch gas trader "GasTerra", as well as to Bulgaria, Poland and Finland, since the spring.

In early June,  officials in Moscow claimed that they did not expect Gazprom to reduce gas supplies to other European customers.

The European Union has sanctioned Russian oil and coal, but has not banned gas imports because of its great dependence on supplies from Moscow.  Read the full story: Russia could completely turn off the gas tap, Europe must "act now", warns the head of the International Energy Agency.
