Zelenski called on the UN to act immediately or to cease its activities

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday called on the UN to act "immediately" in the face of "war crimes" committed by Russia in his country, otherwise the United Nations should "simply shut down." Volodymyr Zelensky also called for Russia to be expelled from the Council, where the country is one of the five permanent members, and for a reform of the system of the United Nations, so that "the right of veto does not mean the right to die."

"Are you ready to close the UN? Do you think the time for international law is over? If the answer is "No", then you need to act immediately. The UN system must be reformed immediately so that the veto is not a right to die," Zelenski said.

The President of Ukraine said that the massacres in Syria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen and Libya should be stopped long ago. "If the aggressor had been stopped, then peace would have been guaranteed, the world would have changed, and there would have been no war in my country," says Zelenski.

The Kyiv leader accused world leaders of not reacting or taking action against Russia's previous attacks on former Soviet republics. "The world is watching but not seeing the occupation of Crimea, the war in Georgia, the occupation of Transnistria in Moldova and how Russia was preparing for other wars near its borders," the Kyiv leader said.

Volodymyr Zelensky noted that in order to restore peace in Ukraine, the UN must do two things. "Recognize Russia as an aggressor and supplier of the war, so that it does not block decisions related to its own aggression. Then we do everything we can to make peace. Or the other option is to show, please, that we can reform or change (...). If there is no alternative and option, the next option would be to dissolve yourself,'' the Ukrainian president said.

In order to reform the global security system, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a global conference, in which it would be decided "how to reform the global security system, how to establish the guarantees of border recognition and the integrity of countries".

"We must do everything we can to give future generations a UN that can respond preventively to security challenges, prevent aggression and bring aggressors to peace. Have the determination and the ability to impose punishments if the principles of peace are violated. There should be no more exemptions and privileges. Everyone must be equal, regardless of their economic, geographical or personal ambitions," Zelenski said.

The Kyiv leader said Ukraine was ready to provide the headquarters for the new security system, similar to the Geneva office, which deals with human rights, or Nairobi, which focuses on environmental issues. "We could have a UN-24 office in Kyiv, which could specialise in peacekeeping," Volodymyr Zelensky said, adding that Ukraine needs peace, Europe needs peace. The world needs peace. Is there so much to ask for today?”
