EU leaders discuss applications for accession by Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova

The European Council is meeting today in a two-day meeting in Brussels, at which it will consider applications for the accession of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine to the European Union (EU). The two states, as well as Georgia, applied for membership shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Radio Moldova reports.

The European Commission issued an opinion on the applications submitted by these countries on June 17, recommending that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine be offered the status of candidate countries, and that Georgia meet more political conditions.

At the Brussels summit, EU leaders will discuss the economic situation, with a decision on Croatia's adoption of the euro expected, and the first working session is scheduled to begin today at 10:30 a.m. Chisinau time.
