Maia Sandu calls on the EU to sanction corruption following the example of the USA: "It is a key priority in the fight for strengthening democracy"

"The phenomenon of corruption represents a direct threat to the security of the state and our democracy, and endangers the territorial integrity of the country, the well-being and the lives of citizens." The statement was made by the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, during the European Partners against Corruption (EPAC) and European contact-point network against corruption (EACN), which held its work on Wednesday in Chisinau.

According to the head of state, the Republic of Moldova is daily affected by manifestations of corruption and hybrid war. At the same time, the corrupt and criminal groups, led by people wanted by justice from us and who are supported by Russia, are trying to stop the government's efforts to clean up the justice system and hold accountable those who stole public money from the citizens. In this context, the head of state urged the participants of the event - investigators, prosecutors, integrity inspectors with a lot of experience in the fight against corruption - to cooperate with the Moldovan authorities, and she also encouraged our professionals to cooperate with the representatives of the anti-corruption institutions in partner countries to achieve effective results.

Maia Sandu called on the European states, calling them to follow the example of the United States of America and to sanction corruption that steals from public money and endangers the stability and democracy of our country. "Corruption knows no borders. It is a transnational problem, a common problem. And it must be solved through joint efforts", said Maia Sandu.

"Fighting corruption, strengthening the capacity and independence of the institutions to prevent and fight corruption is a key priority in the fight for the consolidation of democracy, economic development and keeping the country on the side of the free world", said the president.

We remind you that on October 26, the US Ministry of Finance (Treasury Department) imposed sanctions on Moldovan oligarchs Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Şor "for actions related to systemic corruption and interference in the elections in Moldova, supported by the Kremlin". Shortly after, President Maia Sandu expressed her hope that these findings will serve as an example for the judiciary in the Republic of Moldova. Later, after this announcement, the fugitive deputy Ilan Şor declared that he was "not affected" by the sanctions imposed by the USA, and the former leader of the Democrats, Vladimir Plahotniuc, announced his intention to return to politics.
