Opinions: The European integration process of the Republic of Moldova could be accelerated

The questionnaire of accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union is a technical stage from which the European Commission aims to understand which are the areas in which both the European partners and the Government of Chisinau must work. According to Radio Moldova, that’s according to the coordinator of the Center for European Studies at the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest, Miruna Butnaru-Troncotă.

The integration process may be difficult at a time when the 27 member states of the European Union must accept the Republic of Moldova as an EU candidate country.

"In the case of Moldova, I think things will be faster. So if all goes well and the Commission gives the green light and develops a favourable opinion, then the ball is in the court of the Council. We are talking about 27 national interests, 27 states, all of which must be accepted and agreed in order for the Republic of Moldova to obtain the status of a candidate country. This is a crucial stage that if the Republic of Moldova passes, the process will surely become much more predictable. Until we get there, it is very important that this questionnaire is completed honestly, safely and very correctly, so that the process goes faster," said the coordinator of the Center for European Studies at the National School of Political and Administrative Studies in Bucharest, Miruna Butnaru-Troncotă.

In an interview with TVR Moldova, Romanian MEP Eugen Tomac also said that developments in the region have fueled new prospects for Moldova's accession to the European Union, and Moldovan citizens must know that an extremely important political decision has been taken at EU level, both for our country and for Ukraine and Georgia.

The official added that the set of priorities set by the European Union for the Republic of Moldova is related to the commitments that our country has made, including through the Association Agreement.

"I believe that the Republic of Moldova, if obviously the evolution in the region will be the one we want - the war in Ukraine will stop - the Transnistrian conflict will enter a negotiating zone exactly as it was drafted in recent years and in Chisinau it will be an equally determined government to implement a series of necessary reforms so that the legislation and institutions of the Republic of Moldova approach what we call the European standard of functioning. This is exactly what this questionnaire entails," said MEP Eugen Tomac.

The official added that the process of integration into the European Union takes many years, but in the context of the situation in the region in the case of the Republic of Moldova, this calendar will be much shorter, compared to other countries, such as Romania.

"This questionnaire implies whether, when and how the Government of the Republic of Moldova is able to implement a series of commitments related to the relationship with the European Union. I am convinced that in Chisinau, the authorities will do everything possible to answer the questions sent as soon as possible. The most important part of this whole process is that if the political decision-makers in Chisinau, the society of the Republic of Moldova really want to remain attached to this goal of European integration, the process itself will happen much faster compared to other states. how was Romania and not only," Eugen Tomac also remarked.

TRM.MD recalls that the application for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union was signed on March 3, and on April 11, our country received the accession questionnaire. A similar questionnaire was sent to Ukraine last week by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who was on a working visit to Kyiv.

The questionnaire has not yet been submitted to Georgia, although the EU-associated country submitted the application for membership at the same time as Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

According to the Chisinau authorities, a response on the prospect of Moldova's accession to the EU could be made during the European Council summit in June.
