The parishioners of Soroca celebrated Saint Mary Magdalene and the great Martyr Foca

Old-style Orthodox Christians celebrate Saint Mary Magdalene and the great Martyr Phocas on Thursday, August 4. Among the people there are several superstitions related to this holiday. For example, on this day, the householders do not work and, under no circumstances, light the fire. The legend says that if these dogmas are violated, Saint Foca punishes with fires, heat and hail, informs Moldova 1.

The parishioners who came today to the church of St. Peter and Paul in Soroca told us that they strictly respect this holiday and came to the church to pray. Tradition says that no work is done on this day, and housewives do not prepare dishes for fear that St. Foca will bring them trouble or burn their harvest.

"We have come to pray for health and peace in the world, for children".

"We were praying for the family, children, it's my niece's birthday, she turns 10. Let's pray to God that he gave us rain. I know that at my parents' house, my mother used to cook the day before, she doesn't let us play with fire. The world is afraid of dangers".

"Today we came as we usually do, we brought children here and we pray for health for those close to us".

The Great Martyr Foca is considered the patron saint of heat and fires caused by lightning. Today, Mary Magdalene is also celebrated.

"She was the first of all people to see our Lord Jesus Christ raised from the dead, who with great zeal preached this truth until the end of her life. St. Martyr Foca is a martyr who suffered through fire and has nothing to do with what Christians believe to be safe from fire", said the parish priest of the church, Andrei Seredenco.

In the Republic of Moldova, over 1,500 women bear the name Magdalena, over 118,000 - Maria, and 48 men bear the name Foca.
