Employment of people with disabilities - a difficult process in the Republic of Moldova

The employment of people with disabilities remains a difficult process in the Republic of Moldova. The Association of Deaf Children from Moldova created a business in the field of beekeeping, where several people with special needs from the village of Cimişeni, Criuleni district work, who now not only feel useful in society but also manage to support their families, reports Moldova 1.

Ecaterina Meresciac from the village of Cimişeni is the mother of three children and suffers from serious locomotor problems. The woman says that she knocked on the door of many institutions to get hired, but every time she received a refusal. Three years ago, she started working within the "Gift of the Bees" Project, a social business for people with disabilities in rural areas.

"They blamed me, you won't cope, because you can't. I have been employed here for three years and it is a social project that is an income in the house. At first I was afraid, but it's interesting here."

In total, six employees with disabilities are employed in the field of work, including Cristina Oleinic, who is also the mother of two children.

"I like my job and I like bees. When the buzzing of bees passes by my ear, it feels very good."

The idea of developing a business in the field of beekeeping and employing people with disabilities belongs to the director of the Association of Deaf Children from Moldova. Now the hive has 56 hives and last year around a ton of honey was collected. All the goods are sold at the fairs and the employees' salaries are paid from the money earned.

During the pandemic, the business was on the verge of closing, but thanks to help from the European Union, the employees' salaries were paid and new equipment was purchased.

"Such support helps civil society organisations to continue their work and to be able to continue to support the vulnerable population in times of crisis", says Georgia Cremene, director of "People in need Moldova"

As part of the "Eastern Partnership - Solidarity Program against Covid-19" program, the Deaf Children's Association from Moldova benefited from a grant worth 4,500 euros.
