Record number of asylum applications registered in the Republic of Moldova

More than eight thousand asylum applications have been filed in our country since the outbreak of the Ukrainian War, a record number, according to the relevant authorities. According to the Migration and Asylum Bureau, up to a hundred applications were previously processed annually, and as a result of the war in Ukraine, they have increased considerably, Radio Moldova reports.

The number of Ukrainian citizens who applied for the right to stay on the territory of the Republic of Moldova increased by 30 percent, with the war in the neighboring country, says the director of the Bureau of Migration and Asylum, Mihail Voda. He explained in a press conference that since February 24 and until now, more than eight thousand asylum applications had been processed, the majority of the applicants being men.

"We have 4,013 people registered in the asylum system. There are 3,658 asylum seekers, most of whom are Ukrainians - 3,263, 180 as refugees and 175 as beneficiaries of humanitarian protection. 720 citizens of Ukraine obtained a residence permit, of which 80 obtained a permanent residence permit, 640 obtained a temporary residence permit. 621 people obtained the right to work in a facilitated regime," said Mihail Voda.

According to the Bureau of Migration and Asylum, there are currently over 77 thousand foreign citizens on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, half of whom are children. About 65 percent of the number of refugees live in Chisinau.

Ukrainian citizens can register in the Republic of Moldova, but also have the opportunity to go to other states. During this period, the transfer of over 4,860 people to the countries of the European Union was ensured.
