Political situation in Moldova discussed in Strasbourg

The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, is paying an official visit to Strasbourg, at the invitation of the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), Hendrik Daems. The Moldovan president discussed with the President of PACE about the current political situation in the Republic of Moldova, further steps to overcome the political crisis and the efforts to reduce and combat the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the presidential press service, the officials also exchanged views on the state of democratic institutions in Moldova, the reform of the justice sector, European integration agenda and the settlement of the Transnistrian conflict.

"I reiterated in a discussion with the PACE President that the main priority of my term as President is the fight against corruption and a g real reform of the judiciary, and I thanked him for the sustained support of the PACE for democratic transformations in Moldova. I also thanked Mr Daems for the invitation to attend the opening of the PACE spring session and for the opportunity to address a message to the plenary of the Parliamentary Assembly", said Maia Sandu.

President Maia Sandu also had a meeting with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Marija Pejčinović Burić. Together with the Secretary General, they participated in the launch of the new Council of Europe Action Plan for the Republic of Moldova, which will advance our relations in the next four years.

According to the agenda, Maia Sandu will meet today with Gianni Buquicchio, President of the Venice Commission, Robert Spano, President of the European Court of Human Rights, and Dunja Mijatovic, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, to discuss the human rights situation in Moldova .

This afternoon, Maia Sandu will have meetings with  Carlo Monticelli, Deputy Governor of the Council of Europe Development Bank, and Leendert Verbeek, President of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities. They will talk about strengthening local democracy and support of local authorities from Moldova.
