September 16 - International day for the protection of the ozone layer

Today, September 16, is marked the International Day for the protection of the ozone layer, reports Radio Moldova Newsreel

The most recent scientific assessment of ozone depletion shows that some parts of the ozone layer have recovered at a rate of 3% per decade since 2000.

According to the evaluations carried out, the ozone layer from the northern hemisphere and from the middle latitude will completely heal until 2030.

The southern hemisphere will follow in 2050 and then the two polar regions by 2060.

Efforts to protect the ozone layer have also contributed to the fight against climate change by avoiding approximately 135 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from 1990 to 2010.

The International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer has been celebrated since 1995. This year marks over 30 years of outstanding international cooperation for the protection of the ozone layer and the climate in general under the Montreal Protocol, which has led to the gradual elimination of 99% of the chemicals called chloro-fluoro-carbides.
