Andrei Spînu: In the coming years, Romania could be the main supplier of gas for the Republic of Moldova

In the coming years, Romania could be the main supplier of gas for the Republic of Moldova, stated the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Andrei Spînu. According to him, there is a possibility for the Republic of Moldova to sign a long-term contract with Bucharest, reports Radio Moldova.

"We understand that our colleagues in Romania also had challenges with gas supplies for this winter, but we are optimistic, taking into account that certain additional exploitation projects of gas reserves in Romania have started and, respectively, I think it is very realistic that in the coming years we would have a contract with Romania", declared Andrei Spînu.

Romania, like the rest of the European countries dependent on Russian gas, is strongly consolidating its energy capacities. Yesterday, the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector was put into operation, which will significantly contribute to the diversification of natural gas supply sources. Present at the event in Sofia, the Romanian Prime Minister, Nicolae Ciucă, also spoke about the need for aid offered to the Republic of Moldova.

Yesterday, Expert Forum launched an open letter in which it urgently asks the management from Bucharest to sign a long-term contract with the Republic of Moldova in order to deliver natural gas at a reasonable price. According to the experts, if Gazprom stops deliveries, the Chisinau authorities will have to buy gas at the market price, which means a tariff three times higher than in Romania.
