(VIDEO) Experts: Wheat prices could rise
The increase in the price of bread occurs in the conditions in which, this year, in the Republic of Moldova, record productions of wheat, barley, peas and rapeseed are registered. Preliminary data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry also show that Moldovan farmers will get a rich harvest of sunflower and corn. However, agricultural experts warn that wheat tariffs could rise, as the countries that make up the world price for this crop have been affected by natural disasters this year, reports Moldova 1.
Even if in some regions of the country certain agricultural lands were compromised due to hail and floods, after harvesting over 99% of the total cultivated areas with wheat, a record harvest was registered, say the specialists from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry. According to them, the results for barley, peas and rape are also very good.
"More than one million 551 thousand tons of wheat have already been harvested, from an area of 340.9 thousand hectares. For barley, we have 260 thousand tons on an area of 63.8 thousand hectares, with a productivity of four tons per hectare, and 4.6 tons were harvested for wheat. Peas - 28.9 thousand tons on an area of about 11 thousand hectares, with a productivity of 2.7 tons per hectare. We have about 89 thousand tons of rapeseed, with a productivity of 2.7 tons per hectare, on an area of 33 thousand hectares. All these crops have set a record for productivity," said the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Şerban.
According to experts, this year's high harvest could somehow help farmers offset last year's losses.
"All these crops this year have a pretty good price, I mean the international one, it is reflected even to the producer. We hope that this would somehow influence the return to a better economic life of agricultural enterprises in the face of the drought that occurred in 2020 and we hope that it will also influence the sowing of land with autumn crops," added Vasile Şerban.
Moreover, experts say that wheat prices on the international market could continue to rise, as many of the large grain-exporting countries have been affected by natural disasters.
"The Republic of Moldova is a very small state and the production is still quite small, we cannot dictate world prices. If Moldovan producers export wheat, they will respect world prices, they will gain from exports. Now the price varies between 5 lei and 5 lei and 50, i.e. it is much higher than last year. Here on the spot it was sold for 1.80 lei, 2 lei, 2.50 lei, practically twice as small,” said the doctor in agriculture, Pintilie Pârvan.
Experts say that Moldova is also in an area endangered by natural disasters, so farmers should take this into account and secure their land.
"The conditions were very good to prepare the soil, to procure seed material, phytosanitary products, fertilizers and to sow in those terms. I think that the land should be insured, but with the condition that the state will allocate its share to the support of agricultural producers, at least 50 to 50 would be a normal thing," Pintilie Pârvan added.
Currently, the state reimburses to agricultural producers 70 percent of the value of the production risk insurance premium.
