US researchers talk of "type 41" adenovirus in cases of mysterious hepatitis in children
U.S. health officials who are investigating mysterious cases of hepatitis in very young children say a first line of research indicates an adenovirus as a cause. "This time, we believe that an adenovirus could be the cause of these cases, but other environmental factors are still being investigated," the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the country's main federal public health agency, said Friday.
The CDC indicates the so-called "type 41" adenovirus, which until now was known to cause severe gastroenteritis.
According to the National Public Health Agency, no such cases have been registered in the Republic of Moldova so far. The situation is monitored by the competent authorities as recommended by the WHO and the European Center for Disease Control (ECDC).
As of April 21, 2022, at least 169 such cases have been reported by 11 countries in the WHO European Region and one in the United States of America. Cases reported in: United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland -114, Spain -13, Israel -12, United States of America - 9, Denmark - 6, Ireland - 5, Netherlands- 4, Italy - 4 , Norway - 2, France - 2, Romania - 1 and Belgium - 1. Children were aged between one month and 16 years, and about 10% of them (17 children) needed a liver transplant. At least one death was reported.
The identified cases were clinically manifested by jaundice and gastrointestinal symptoms, including abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, and elevated liver enzymes. Most cases were fever-free.
