Donald Trump and Tayyip Erdogan discussed the withdrawal of US troops from Syria
US President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday of a "slow and coordinated" withdrawal of US troops from Syria, the Reuters agency reports.
"We discussed about the Islamic State, our involvement in Syria, and a slow and coordinated withdrawal of US troops from that region. After many years, they will return home," Donald Trump said in a Twitter message.
The White House leader added that the two had also talked about trade between Turkey and the United States.
Donald Trump announced on Wednesday he was preparing for the "total" and "rapid" withdrawal of US troops from Syria, including units involved in operations against the Islamic State terrorist network.
Turkish media reported that the Ankara administration sent troops to strengthen the military presence at the Syrian border a few days after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan reported that Turkey would postpone a military operation in Syria in view of the withdrawal of US troops in the area.
