Testimonies of women who were evacuated from the Azovstal plant
Some of the civilians who took refuge in the Azovstal plant in Mariupol saw the light of day after several weeks. More than 100 people were evacuated on Sunday. This was announced by the leader of Kyiv, Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian government has said that evacuations from Mariupol would continue on Monday morning. It comes after the mission was interrupted on Sunday evening for security reasons, after the Azovstal plant was attacked again, Moldova 1 reports.
After weeks of hiding from bombings, several women, the elderly and children finally had the opportunity to leave the Azovstal plant in Mariupol on Sunday. The evacuation was possible after the United Nations and the Red Cross negotiated an agreement. The evacuees are horrified by what they went through during this period.
"Indeed the food was running out";
"Children always wanted to eat. An adult is more patient, but children are not," people said.
The evacuated people were transported by bus to the city of Zaporozhye, the Ukrainian president announced.
"We have finally managed to start evacuating people from Azovstal. After many weeks of negotiations, after many attempts, meetings. There was not a single day that we did not try to find a way to save people. Now, for the first time in all these days of war, this vital corridor has begun to function, " said Volodymyr Zelenski.
Finding a drop of water in the bombed Mariupol was just as dangerous. People recounted how the children waited for the rain to drink water from the puddles, and the women risked their lives running miles, under artillery fire, to a well. After Julia's house was destroyed by Russian missiles, the woman and her daughters hid in a basement. There was no mention of food, hygiene products or other living conditions, the woman told the BBC.
"I had a small bowl of soup for three children once a day. And a glass of water for them to wash. It was a fountain three miles away. I had to run there under gunfire, under bombs," the woman remembers.
At the same time, eight civilians were killed in bombings in the Kharkov and Donetsk regions on Sunday, four of them in the city of Liman alone, regional governors said. Russian forces continue their offensive in southern Ukraine. According to the Ukrainian Army General Staff, Russia is trying to advance to the administrative border of the Kherson region, to occupy the entire region. Meanwhile, Ukraine has decided to officially close the four ports on the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov that were captured by Russian forces, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture announced on Monday, Reuters reports.
