Thousands of protesters stormed the residence of the Sri Lankan president

Thousands of protesters stormed the residence of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the Sri Lankan capital. Protesters across the country marched in Colombo demanding his resignation, dissatisfied with the country's mismanagement of the country's economic crisis.

The country is suffering from heavy inflation and is struggling to import food, fuel and medicine. Thousands of anti-government protesters moved to the capital. They entered the government district of Colombo.

Police fired into the air and used tear gas to prevent angry mobs from invading the residence, but were unable to stop part of the crowd from entering.

"The president was escorted safely," a senior defence source told AFP. "He is still the president, he is protected by a military unit."

Images broadcast live from Facebook inside the building showed hundreds of protesters walking through rooms and corridors, while hundreds also walked outside.

BBC footage showed dozens of people taking a bath in the palace pool.
