Maia Sandu: Our state is very weak in the fight against the pandemic
Our country is very weak in the face of the pandemic, because we have state institutions that cannot fulfill their tasks and we have politicians who, instead of helping, try to put obstacles. The statement was made today by President Maia Sandu on the public television station Moldova 1, during the show "Buna Seara" (Good Evening).
The head of state stressed that all countries face great difficulties in the fight against the pandemic, "but there are states that fulfill their commitments to citizens with much more responsibility and there is our situation with this general crisis, which we face and these things are to the detriment of the citizens".
Asked when she believes that mass vaccination will start in the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu said that she personally does her best to bring as many doses of vaccine as possible to the country.
"I talk every day with foreign officials, with companies that produce vaccines, so that we can bring as many doses of vaccines in the country. So far, we have managed to bring donations, but I think we also have to buy, because it's about people's lives and health," Maia Sandu said.
In the opinion of the head of state, "money for the purchase of vaccines can be found from the 50 billion lei provided to be spent in a year, but the problem is to have access to this vaccine, because the Republic of Moldova is not the only country desperately looking for a vaccine".
The country's president expressed disappointment over "the speed with which the first stage of vaccination of medical staff is being done." "If there are still delays, I will recommend to the Ministry of Health that the next stage of vaccination be started. I don't think we have to wait until some hospitals will think I don't know how many weeks," Maia Sandu stressed.
In this context, the head of state thanked the medical institutions where the vaccination started and the process went very well. "There are some district hospitals that are exemplary in this regard, but there are also hospitals that have the vaccine on the shelf and things do not happen. I wonder if it is sabotage, or is it irresponsibility on the part of the leaders of these institutions," added Maia Sandu.
In the president's opinion, the Ministry of Health should give an appreciation to this phenomenon. "I asked the Prime Minister to strengthen the team at the Ministry of Health, now that the decision of the Constitutional Court allows for the appointment of secretaries of state. I hope that in the coming days, as soon as possible, the Government will appoint secretaries of state at the Ministry of Health. "So that we have a large team of professionals who can clarify all these things. And related to vaccination, but especially related to the administration of the pandemic in general," the head of state announced.
Regarding the purchase of the COVID-19 vaccine, Maia Sandu said that the Government "should try to buy from all companies and provide safe vaccines and a choice for the people."
