In the south of the country, the picking of table grapes for the production of sparkling wines has begun
In the south of the country, the picking of table grapes for the production of sparkling wines has begun. Winegrowers say that due to the prolonged drought, this year's harvest is much weaker than last year's. They also mention that in two weeks the harvesting of the main technical vine varieties will begin, Moldova 1 reports.
One of the largest wine companies in the Gagauz region manages 230 hectares of vineyards. The first grape varieties harvested are Aligote and Chardonnay.
"The harvest is good and easy to harvest. I have been working in this field for 40 years. Although this year was dry, the harvest is quite good".
"Although there were few rains, the grape harvest is good."
Farmers say that, this year, the quality of the grapes is, however, worse, compared to last year. All because of the long drought. Likewise, the taste of the grains was affected.
"The quality of production decreased because there was not enough moisture, there was no rain in this region for three months. The berries are smaller, in some places the grapes are starting to wither. We harvest up to 4 hectares of grapes. The sugar content is within normal limits for sparkling wine, however, it is not enough for dry wine", says Vitalie Petrov, agronomist, Comrat.
In the Gagauz autonomy, almost 5,400 hectares of agricultural land are occupied by vineyards, of which over 3,700 hectares are technical varieties and over 700 hectares - table varieties.
