Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear accident
Today marks the 35th anniversary of the worst nuclear accident in history, the Chernobyl nuclear accident, an accident consisting of an explosion of the plant, followed by radioactive contamination of the entire European space of the former Soviet Union, Europe and the eastern parts of North America.
The disaster occurred on April 26, 1986, at 1:23 p.m near the city of Pripyat, Ukraine, which is currently abandoned. The explosion had major consequences on public health, the environment, as well as important socio-economic consequences. The total number of deaths varies, depending on the source, from a few dozen cases to a few million, as does the number of cancers or birth defects.
In order to liquidate the consequences at Chernobyl, more than 3,500 Moldovan citizens were involved in that period.
The country's president, Maia Sandu, expressed gratitude and respect for the sacrifice and heroism of those days, "due to which hundreds of thousands of lives were saved from the danger of radioactive contamination."
"The radioactive cloud at Chernobyl has spread over much of the European continent. Pollution does not stop at borders, so close cooperation between the countries of the world is needed to tighten nuclear safety rules and develop policies to prevent such disasters. The Chernobyl catastrophe teaches us a fundamental lesson - a society can only overcome collective tragedies if it works in solidarity for the common good and has institutions that focus on protecting people's lives and the environment. This is what we want to build in the Republic of Moldova - a state that thinks for the good of the people and acts responsibly and transparently for the good life of its citizens," reads Maia Sandu's message.
A rally will be held in Chisinau to commemorate the victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster and other nuclear damage.
TRM.MD recalls that, annually, on April 26, is marked the Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Chernobyl Disaster, decreed by the resolution of the General Assembly of the United Nations of December 8, 2016.
