Marathon in Chisinau on the global protection of the ozone layer
They decided to run continuously for 35 hours to convince Moldovans to turn off the air conditioner during the marathon. It is about a group of athletes participating in a sports event organized in the capital on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Vienna Convention on the Global Protection of the Ozone Layer. The marathon that will end on Sunday at 07:00 has the slogan "Ozone For Life", reports Moldova 1.
"We continue to run until Sunday morning, exactly 35 hours. Each athlete chooses his own route, either limited to Valea Morilor, or makes a larger circle through the city. Most runners will run over 100 km," said Iulian Bercu, president of RUNMoldova.
The marathoners' initiative is supported by the authorities.
"The event is organized in the context of the 35th anniversary of the signing of the Vienna Protocol. In stages, we ban the import into the Republic of Moldova of certain chemicals contained in refrigeration equipment, in air conditioning," said Maxim Popov, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment.
Most passers-by supported the athletes' message of giving up air conditioning for 35 hours, others said they were not ready to do so.
The International Day for the Protection of the Ozone Layer is marked annually on September 16. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of marathon participants is limited. During running, athletes avoid congestion.
