Walnut kernel, more expensive this year

The price of walnut kernels has risen this year. While at the collection points of the walnut kernel it is bought for up to 120 lei per kilogram, at the stalls in the Central Market it is sold twice as much. Sellers say the pandemic is to blame, as well as the small harvest due to frosts this spring, Mesager reports.

Ana Scurcan came from Hânceşti to the Central  Market to analyze the prices for walnut kernels. She says she will not sell it yet, as she is looking forward to the winter holidays and hopes the price will rise.

"This year there are few nuts and they seem to be cheap", says Ana Scurcan, a resident of Hânceşti.

"It's a bit expensive. We buy for mom and for me every year ".

"The prices are very high. Even if the walnut kernel is expensive, we have to buy it. However, in a smaller amount than last year ", people say.

On the other hand, sellers admit that prices have risen, but blame the pandemic, but also the spring frosts.

" In some regions less, in others better, in some places the nuts were affected. It's not up to us”.

"Those who go abroad buy them. Throughout the year I've been on the market, prices have always been like this. - Aren't they expensive? - No no".

"Do you have sales?" -No, I still haven't had one. Not many, less than in other years ", say the  people.

At the Central Market in Chisinau, the price of a kilogram of walnut kernel reaches up to 250 lei, but those at the collection points offer a price between 80 and 120 per kilogram.
