Moldova could produce the drug for the treatment of patients with COVID-19

The Republic of Moldova could soon produce Remdesivir, the first drug authorized in the United States and the European Union for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. The Medicines Agency announces that it has launched discussions with domestic producers, but also with authorities in other states, to identify a solution that will allow our country to produce this preparation, which will allow in a short time and at an affordable price to ensure the needs of Moldovans patients infected with the new Coronavirus. The health authorities announce that in the next few days another five thousand doses of this preparation will arrive in the country and that their import has already been authorized. The value of the lot amounts to almost $450,000, reports Moldova 1.

Given that more and more patients end up being intubated in intensive care units, and the number of deaths is increasing day by day, Moldova wants to produce an effective preparation, coveted by many countries around the world. Remdesivir is produced by an American company, and the authorities in Chisinau are in talks to obtain a license, so that this preparation is also produced in the Republic of Moldova.

"This means that the Republic of Moldova will be able to provide Remdesivir through local producers, according to the formula established by the basic producer. This is primarily the insurance in a very fast time, when the requested product is present. The second aspect is accessibility, there is the price, which will also be diminished in the condition that the transport expenses, logistical expenses will not be borne," declared the director of the Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices, Eremei Priseajniuc.

Many of the drugs used today to treat patients with the new Coronavirus in hospitals in the country are produced by a local company, which has been present on the Moldovan market for almost 15 years. Respectively, tens of thousands of doses of famotidine, dexamethasone, paracetamol are produced, in total, 12 medicinal preparations that are today widely used in the treatment of patients with COVID-19 infection in Moldova. To produce the medicinal preparations, 240 employees work daily at the factory. In total, the portfolio of this factory today includes 245 names and dosage variants of drugs from various groups. The factory has three production micro-factories, and the company's administration, which is internationally accredited with GMP certification, assures that immediately after obtaining the license right in no more than three months, the production of the new preparation could start.

According to the Medicines Agency, another 5,000 vials of Remdesivir will arrive in the country in the near future, after the import authorization was signed. At the beginning of last week, 1,000 doses arrived in Moldova, out of the two thousand previously authorized by the agency. The preparation is to be distributed in the hospitals with COVID-19 profile in the country, after the development of the public procurement procedures. The import price of a bottle is between 1,500-1,600 lei.
