American political scientist: "Ukraine is the shield of the Republic of Moldova"

Ukraine is the shield of the Republic of Moldova. The most important thing for our country is to remain in the sights of the West, and the politicians from Chisinau to prove that they are serious when it comes to joining the European Union, said the famous American political scientist Francis Fukuyama in an interview for Moldova 1. The weakening of Russia following the war it started in Ukraine will mean more freedom for our country and actually represents a historical opportunity, reports Moldova 1.

"Probably the most important thing for you is to stay on the agenda of NATO and Washington in particular. For a small country, it is very easy for these powers to forget about the Republic of Moldova. And it's good to have their attention, as long as this possibility exists, in terms of joining the EU. To insist and remember that your country is also vulnerable. I think that now there is a generalised sympathy for all the countries on the periphery of Russia", said the American political scientist Francis Fukuyama.

Russia could withdraw its army from the Transnistrian region, the opportune moment, however, is the weakening of its position in Ukraine. In general, the loss of the war will mean for Putin the loss of power and this will be felt in the exclaves that Russia has in the former Soviet Union.

"There are Russian pockets everywhere. The Transnistrian region was taken first, but it is not unique. I believe that the fate of these regions depends very much on what will happen in Russia. Until last week, I didn't think we could see a change in the Kremlin because of the failure in Ukraine," the political scientist added.

However, it is unlikely that after Putin a new Russia will come, liberal and federal in the true sense of the word. There is a consensus among the elites to keep the centre of power in Moscow to avoid the disintegration of the Russian Federation.

"Whether it is possible to have a liberal Russia that allows more autonomy to the regions is a difficult question, because many have learned the lesson of Gorbachev: the moment you offer freedom, then everyone will want to leave."

The success of the Ukrainian offensive and the advance in the occupied territories is a guarantee that Europe and the West will continue to support Ukraine in this war. In practice, the Ukrainians demonstrated that military assistance is not in vain. Not even the energy crisis can endanger the popular support that Ukraine has won in Europe, Francis Fukuyama believes.

"Actually, I'm not too worried that Europe's support for Ukraine will be lost, at least this winter. Beyond that, more successes are needed, I think they are possible and they will be".

Francis Fukuyama is a professor at Stanford University in the United States of America. He is known for his work "The End of History and the Last Man", published in 1992.
