PACE Official: Ongoing arrival of Ukrainian refugees in our country could provoke a humanitarian crisis (AUDIO)

The number of Ukrainian refugees from the Republic of Moldova is declining, but the situation of those arriving now is worse, according to PACE, which warns that there is a risk of a humanitarian crisis, Radio Moldova reports.

The Republic of Moldova has reached the limits of receiving refugees, and their ongoing arrival due to the war in Ukraine risks leading to a humanitarian crisis, according to the report presented to the Council of Europe Migration Committee.

The rapporteur points out that, although the flow of refugees has decreased, those who are now arriving are in a more vulnerable situation and are likely to spend more time in Moldova.

Of the nearly 500,000 Ukrainian refugees who have crossed the border, the Republic of Moldova now hosts about 80,000 people. About 90% of the refugees are housed by more than 10,000 local families.

The rapporteur for the Republic of Moldova mentions that at the border crossing point in Palanca and in the Refugee Accommodation Center of "Moldexpo" he talked to several people, who expressed their desire to return home as soon as possible. The PACE official also noted that the trend is that slightly more people return to Ukraine than come.

The report was presented on World Refugee Day and at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.

On this occasion, PACE together with the UN Refugee Agency pointed out that anyone fleeing war, conflict or persecution, or who is exposed to violence, exploitation and abuse, has the right to seek protection and security.
