Japanese best practices in digital media discussed at TRM conference

Japan's experience in developing an independent media environment adapted to the digital age was at the center of the discussions at the conference "Contemporary media challenges in the digital age", organized on March 10 by Teleradio-Moldova (TRM). The event benefited from the presence of Japanese experts and representatives of the Embassy of Japan in the Republic of Moldova and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), who shared solutions and successful models in the media field.

In opening the event, His Excellency the Ambassador of Japan, Yoichiro Yamada, emphasized the importance of an independent public broadcaster for strengthening democracy and press freedom: "Media plays an essential role in any democratic society. Free, fair and independent journalism contributes to the development of a transparent and accountable society. Public broadcasters, in particular, have a crucial mission - to provide verified information, promote diversity of opinion and combat disinformation. Japan supports the values of a free and independent press and understands the challenges facing media in the digital age."

Deputy Director General Andrei Zapsa addressed the strategic directions of TRM's development, underlining the importance of a consolidated editorial policy, quality media productions and investments in digitalization. "At Teleradio-Moldova, we aim to become a model of professionalism, editorial balance and technological innovation. Our goal is to build a modern public broadcaster, open to strategic partnerships and in step with global transformations in the media. It is only through collaboration, innovation and sustainable investment that we will be able to meet the challenges and deliver quality journalism that we can all be proud of," said Andrei Zapsa.

From the perspective of strengthening the media in other countries, Dr. Keiichi Hashimoto highlighted the example of cooperation with the Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne: "JICA supports public broadcasting as an essential element of democracy and an independent media environment, contributing to the improvement of media education and the development of international cooperation. JICA's goals in Ukraine are aimed at developing cooperation, protecting and supporting media education, and strengthening media self-regulatory authorities."

The conference was held as an introduction to the investment project that Japan is initiating with TRM. It comes in continuation of a previously signed Memorandum of Understanding, whereby Japan is providing technical assistance worth about $700,000 for the development and modernization of Teleradio-Moldova.
