NBS: The agricultural production sector was most affected in 2020

Agricultural production decreased by 27% in 2020 in the Republic of Moldova compared to the analog period in 2019, according to the latest report of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), and the most affected was the agricultural vegetable production sector. NBS data also show that cereals and legumes suffered the most, whose yield fell by more than 50%. At the same time, experts say that 2020 was practically a missed year for agriculture, with bad weather from spring to autumn. However, they believe that commodity prices will not rise, but those who will continue to suffer are farmers, Moldova 1 reports.

According to experts, the year 2020 was influenced by three risk factors: frost, hail and drought. Thus, the negative impact was higher than that caused by the pandemic, experts say.

"There are farmers who have not harvested anything. A major blow has also been caused to households, which produce more crops for their own consumption. Problems existed in 2020 primarily with creditors. The second problem has arisen for some businesses that lease agricultural land from landlords. The economic agents did not have the possibility to pay the rent cost. Prices for agricultural products cannot increase, because we are in a period in which local products can be easily replaced by imported products," says Viorel Chivriga, IDIS Viitorul expert.

The only hope that the farmer has, after the autumn and winter rains, is that he will have a rich harvest that will cover part of the losses.

Statistics also show that animal production suffered less, with a decrease of only 3.8%, but the effects of last year's poor harvest will be reflected in the livestock sector, especially this year, experts say.
