Ion Chicu: Tens of thousands of jobs are in danger in Moldova
Consumption and investments could decrease by 27.8 billion lei by the end of this year, and the country's Gross Domestic Product would be reduced by more than six percent, compared to last year. The estimates were made at the plenary session of the Economic Council under the Prime Minister, held online.
"We live in unprecedented times. One hundred years ago, humanity went through a severe epidemic, but then people were not so mobile, the tourism industry was not developed and HoReCa, which employs in the chain alone in the Republic of Moldova tens of thousands of people. In general, the share of services in GDP was very low. The pandemic has hit non-essential service and product manufacturers. In Moldova, tens of thousands of jobs are in danger, and globally - hundreds of millions," said Prime Minister Ion Chicu.
The issue of lifting restrictions and preparing for safe resumption of economic activities was also addressed. The authorities work with associations to develop activity procedures during the state of emergency in public health. It is proposed to make amendments to the Labor Code to allow the preservation of jobs and the prevention of mass layoffs.
The Prime Minister spoke about the Government's focus on digitizing public services, including work in the fields of health and education. Regulations are being developed and investments will be made in technical capacities and information systems both from public sources and from the assistance of development partners.
The Prime Minister assured the business environment that the Government will not come with tax increases and will ensure predictable working conditions.
