Ion Chicu: The new law on salary can’t leave the budget employees without meal vouchers
The new wage law has no way to leave the budget employees without meal vouchers because they have not even benefited from them. The statement was made by Finance Minister Ion Chicu as a reaction to information in the press that the Finance Ministry would have recommended that as of 1 January 2019 the granting of savings awards and meal vouchers for the budgetary sector would be suspended.
Finance Minister Ion Chicu wrote on his facebook page that "meal vouchers are offered by the employer, if desired and if possible, in addition to and not to the detriment of the existing salary."
Chicu exemplified that if the employer offers a salary of 5,000 lei, then he could offer, in the form of meal vouchers, a maximum of 45 lei a day, in addition. Respectively, in the case of the state, as an employer for the public sector, the approach was to raise wages, on the grounds that it is better to give employees more money than vouchers, which have a relatively low capitalization, says Ion Chicu. According to him, from this recital and onwards, the government will go on wage increases.
The wage reform came into force on 1 December 2018. The law provides for wage increases of more than 20, 50 or 90 percent for 150,000 public servants. From salary increases will benefit education, health, social assistance officials, as well as representatives of local public authorities. According to the project, the salaries of teachers in schools will be higher on average by more than 800 lei and will exceed 6,700 lei.
