Moldova to join the Single Euro Payments Area

Moldova could join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). The topic was addressed during a meeting between the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), Octavian Armaşu, and the Deputy Director-General for Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, Katarina Mathernova. According to a statement issued by the NBM, the participants in the process are analyzing the accession criteria and the steps to be taken in making this commitment.

According to the quoted source, during the meeting, Octavian Armaşu referred to the macro-financial and economic developments in the Republic of Moldova, the activity of the banking sector and the measures taken by the NBM against the background of the energy crisis and the pandemic situation. The officials also talked about the progress of the process of taking over by the NBM, in the summer of 2023, the competencies for supervising the non-banking financial sector - competencies that currently belong to the National Commission of the Financial Market (CNPF).

SEPA is an initiative of the European banking industry, created with the support of the European Commission and the European Central Bank, which aims to establish an integrated euro payments area and ensure that cross-border payments in euros are as easy and efficient as domestic ones.
