Testimonies of Constantin Oboroc: Why didn't Mihail Gorbachev arrive in Chisinau, before the proclamation of the Independence of the Republic of Moldova
At a crossroads for the fate of our country, at the end of the 90s, the last general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was invited to Chisinau by the deputy of the last Parliament of the USSR, Constantin Oboroc. In an interview for Radio Moldova, conducted by journalist Larisa Verdeş, the politician stated that he invited Gorbachev to "put an end to the burning fire".
"Everything was prepared, two planes came to Chisinau with all the cars, with all the equipment, with all the personal security, all this army accompanying a president like this. Moreover, an itinerary was established where to arrive, everything was prepared. In the evening, around eight or nine o'clock, the day before Gorbachev was to come, President Snegur called once again the entire government team that was included in the preparation of Gorbachev's visit", Constantin Oboroc said.
