Restoration work on the medieval kilns in Vorniceni could be resumed

The restoration works of the medieval kilns, which were discovered in the village of Vorniceni-Gura Văii in the Straseni district seven years ago, could be resumed thanks to a national financing project. Researchers later want to include them in the tourist circuit. The two pottery complexes date from the 14th century and could become an important tourist attraction, experts say, Moldova 1 reports.

The two medieval clay kilns were discovered by chance in the fall of 2013, in the yard of an old woman. Aunt Maria still remembers that day when one of her sons dug a hole in the garden.

"A boy of mine started digging a hole and came across something special. He suddenly announced the mayor's office and they came here, they looked and said not to dig anything and they started working," says Maria Diaconu, a resident of Vorniceni village.

Then an attempt was made to preserve objects of historical importance by involving a specialist from Romania and with the financial support of the historian Ion Ursu. However, they came to a halt due to a lack of further funding. Meanwhile, one of the kilns has deteriorated due to groundwater.

"We find that especially in 2017, when it was that snow in April, the middle area between these furnaces, being also a medieval household pit and being emptied of archaeological materials, then appeared the groundwater and that furnace which was even worse preserved then, it degraded more and disused," declared the director of the National Archeology Agency, Vlad Vornic.

The furnaces were discovered at a depth of one meter. The excavations were carried out in the period 2013-2014. Archaeologist Vlad Vornic says that towards the bottom of the slope there is the probability that there will be other medieval constructions of this kind.

"Certainly, in the near future, there will be some surveys, maybe a magnetometric research in this area and then maybe certainly excavations and we hope a lot, being a first case in the Republic of Moldova for the preservation of such pottery kilns and archaeological complexes in general, in the open air, to museumize them and to capitalize on them from a tourist point of view," Vlad Vornic also declared.

According to local authorities, there is a chance that the process of preserving these two pottery kilns will be completed, thanks to a new project funded by the National Regional Development Fund.

"We have now applied together with the Center Regional Development Agency, the Straseni District Council and several other mayoralties, a concept to be funded in order to rehabilitate these objectives. I understood that in the first phase we were chosen to be funded. We hope to pass the other phases and in the end to see results in terms of tourism," said the mayor of Vorniceni, Vasile Tofan.

According to specialists, such archaeological complexes are unique in our country.
