The Diabetes Youth Association ask authorities to refrain from purchasing insulin analogues

Representatives of the Young Diabetes Association have asked the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare to renounce the purchase of insulin analogues, as it has not been tested enough yet. In reply, the Ministry announced that the analogue medicine was recommended by specialists, but promises to set up a working group to thoroughly evaluate its quality, TV Moldova 1 reports.

The Moldovan Diabetes Association of the Republic of Moldova filed a petition asking the authorities to abandon the purchase of biosimilar insulin in favor of the original medicine.

"We ask for the preliminary results of the November 30 auction on the purchase of insulin analogs to be canceled or revised. We are asking to return to the original glargine insulin or that people are administering right now," said Veronica Volcov, president of the Association of Young Diabetes.

Veronica Volcov qualifies this practice as a huge experiment in which patients disagree to participate.

"We want safety, we want safe, tested enough insulin and we do not want to be part of an experiment that we did not agree to. Any small deviation in its production can cause different properties and effects, so these effects can be reflected in the patient in the most diverse ways, sure that hipo and unexpected hyperglycemia are the most important challenges," said the president of the Association of Young Diabetes.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, the administration of insulin analogues for people with Type 1 diabetes will be introduced in January. Also since then, it will be possible to purchase insulin in cartridges instead of vials, and all patients with diabetes will be provided with free tests to test their blood glucose levels on a regular basis, reports Radio Moldova News.

"In order to ensure that diabetes patients have access to effective and qualitative treatment, according to international standards, to reduce complications and improve quality of life, according to the National Program for Prevention and Control of Diabetes for 2017-2021, the Ministry of Health ordered the purchase of analogs of insulin, to give patients the opportunity to use effective preparations recommended by the World Health Organization as well," said Cristina Stratulat, quoted by Radio Moldova.

Also, the use of insulin analogues has been recommended internationally, also by the US Diabetes Association.

TRM.MD recalls that there is an increase in the number of people with diabetes in the Republic of Moldova. According to statistics, in 2017 only, nearly 105,000 diabetic patients were registered, with more than eight thousand more than the previous year, of which over 400 are children. Of these, 80% are sick with type 1 diabetes and 20% with type 2 diabetes.
