The population of the Republic of Moldova is continuously decreasing

The population of the Republic of Moldova is continuously decreasing in the last eight years, according to the statistical data of the National Bureau of Statistics. Depopulation is a trend that manifests itself in the regions of the country, but in seven districts they reach rates of about 20%. The reasons for the depopulation are multiple, say experts in the field, the natural increase, but also emigration, which has been recorded throughout the more than 30 years of independence, reports Radio Moldova.

Since the beginning of 2014, the population with the usual residence of the Republic of Moldova has been continuously decreasing, reaching 2.6 million inhabitants at the beginning of the current year, of which about 40% is the urban population and about 60% - the rural population, according to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics.

During these 8 years, the depopulation of the country constituted 266 thousand people from the country's population. The most affected was the rural area, where the population decreased by 13%.

The largest population losses were registered in the districts: Cimişlia (-22%), Cantemir (-20%), Călăraşi, Teleneşti, Hânceşti (-19%), Briceni and Nisporeni (-18%).

The basic factors that determine the reduction of the population are: negative natural increase, external and internal emigration. All this being caused by the precarious economic situation in the country, explains demographer Valeriu Sainsus. According to him, the depopulation of the districts is also strongly influenced by the internal migration of the population to larger cities with more professional opportunities.

"It is the third decade of depopulation and it is one of the top depopulating countries in the world. We have a drastic decrease in the young population, and excessive migration. Internal migrations, most often the population, settled in the surroundings of the city of Chisinau. The basic factor is the lack of jobs. Changing demographic trends is a long-term problem, which means that in the next five, ten years we cannot radically influence the evolution of the population", said demographer Valeriu Sainsus.

The statistical data also reveal that the distribution of the population by region and by some age groups is almost uniform. The municipality of Chisinau is noteworthy, where the share of people of working age is the highest, and the share of elderly people is the lowest compared to the other development regions. At the same time, only in the municipality of Chisinau the share of the young population (0-15 years) at the beginning of 2022 compared to 2014 increased by 3.4 percentage points.
