A Moldovan, sentenced to prison for being a mercenary in Donetsk, Ukraine

The Prosecutor's Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases (PCCOCS) announces the conviction of a citizen of the Republic of Moldova for the crime of mercenary in Donetsk, Ukraine, in the period 2016-2021. According to the cited source, the man, aged 34, is originally from the Străşeni district.

Based on the evidence gathered by the officers of the Intelligence and Security Service (SIS), he was detained upon his return to the country, at the Sculeni border crossing point and subjected to investigations. The defendant admitted his guilt to committing the crime of mercenary, manifested by his participation in the armed conflict in Ukraine, by contributing to the secession of the separatist regions of Luhansk and Donetsk of Ukraine.

Initially, he enlisted in the military formation "Pervaia Slaveanscaia Brigada" of the self-proclaimed Republic of Donetsk, within which he participated in the military conflict as a soldier. Later, he was promoted as battalion commander, and later - platoon commander in telecommunications. According to the defendant's statements, he was remunerated monthly, and the total annual amount was 150,000 Russian rubles, the equivalent of about 48 thousand lei.

PCCOCS announces that, according to the law, the man benefited from a reduced sentence, after he admitted his guilt, and was sentenced to three years and six months in prison. The man was placed under arrest until the sentence pronounced on Friday, November 11, comes into force.
