Spinu: If Gazprom stops gas delivery, the Republic of Moldova will buy gas from the international market, and electricity from Ukraine

If Gazprom terminates the contract with Moldovagaz, Chisinau will no longer procure electricity from Cuciurgan, and we will buy gas at the market price. The statements were made by Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spînu during a show on Jurnal TV.

"The largest gas consumer in the Transnistrian region is the Cuciurgan Power Plant, if they will no longer have gas through the contract with Moldovagaz, obviously, they will no longer be able to operate and the problem of electricity arises. But we have already signed an emergency contract with our partners in Ukraine, we will receive 100% electricity from Ukraine, at a price of approximately $75", Andrei Spînu said.

The Deputy Prime Minister mentioned that if on September 1 Gazprom stops the gas, the Republic of Moldova has a reserve of 24.5 million cubic metres of gas, which would be enough for about a month, during the warm period of the year, and for a week, in winter time.

The Republic of Moldova signed a credit agreement of 300 million euros, money that it will use to supplement gas reserves for internal needs. This gas reserve would be enough for about another month and a half, under the conditions in which Termoelectrica will start operating on fuel oil and other gas saving actions will be implemented.

Andrei Spînu also spoke about the compensations that will be allocated for the heating season, as a result of the increase in gas and electricity tariffs for end consumers. He mentioned that, this year, the compensations will be offered depending on the family's income, based on a mechanism that was applied last year too, only that it will be more targeted. The new mechanism will come with support in the gas, thermal energy and electricity bill. "According to our calculations, approximately 80 percent of all consumers will receive compensation, because the level of energy poverty, as I call it, is quite high at the rates that are now," said the deputy prime minister.

Referring to the decision regarding online studies, they could only be implemented in educational institutions, which heat exclusively with gas

The Deputy Prime Minister specified that a good part of the educational institutions in Moldova are connected to the centralized heating system and can use coal, and 116 schools in Moldova still have stoves. Studies in these institutions will not be interrupted, stated Andrei Spînu.
