Russia is ready for negotiations with Ukraine. What conditions does it impose?
Russia is ready to negotiate with Ukraine at any time as soon as "the Ukrainian armed forces hear our call and lay down their arms," Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying by AFP on Friday at a news conference.
The head of Russian diplomacy was virtually an echo of Putin's assurance that "no one is preparing to occupy Ukraine, and the purpose of the operation is clear: demilitarisation and denazification." Lavrov thus suggests that Moscow wants to overthrow the ruling Volodymyr Zelensky regime. Lavrov assured that the goal of the Russian invasion of Ukraine was to "liberate" the Ukrainians.
"Russian President Vladimir Putin has taken the decision of this special military operation to demilitarise Ukraine so that, freed from this oppression, Ukrainians can freely choose their future," Lavrov said during a meeting on Friday with pro-Russian separatist leaders in Donbas.
Also Friday, the Kremlin threatened to retaliate against Western sanctions on Russia after invading Ukraine. "Retaliatory measures will follow. The extent to which they are symmetrical or asymmetrical will depend on the analysis of the restrictions," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by RFI.
Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a large-scale military operation against Ukraine on Thursday, February 24, at 3:00 a.m., with airstrikes and the entry of Russian ground forces from several directions into Ukrainian territory, after recognizing the independence of the separatist regions in eastern Ukraine. At least 100 people were killed on the first day of the war and hundreds more were injured, Ukrainian authorities said. At the same time, thousands of Ukrainians have already left their country, with women and children fleeing the war entering the Republic of Moldova on Thursday.
On Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced his stay in Kiev as Ukrainian forces fight Russian invaders advancing on the Ukrainian capital in the strongest attack on a European state since World War II, Reuters reported, quoted by Free Europe.
