Veaceslav Ioniţă: The tariff to gas will remain the same or could increase, even if we purchase cheaper gas from October

If deliveries continue and the delivery contract in the form of last year remains in force, then we will procure gas from the Russian Federation at a lower price, but this will not lead to a decrease in the tariff, because in the coming months we will have to pay all the tariff deviations of the last period, says the economic expert Veaceslav Ioniţă.

"We will have the same tariff, and in the worst case we could see a tariff increase. The increase could be caused by two factors. If we fail to have a contract with the Russian Federation, then we will have to buy gas on the free market, it will be much more expensive. If we don't have an amicable agreement with the Russian Federation and they insist on paying the historical debts", said Veaceslav Ioniţă in the program "Zi de zi" on Radio Moldova.

"It's sad that the Republic of Moldova negotiates the gas price in October and not in May", said the expert, noting that he is worried that the Government has not done its homework.

"The risk we have with the suspension of gas deliveries is related to the non-fulfillment that the government assumed last year", said Ioniţă, stating that the authorities did not carry out the audit in the set  terms.

According to the expert, the most vulnerable are the residents of apartments - about 260 thousand families -, who only have autonomous heating with gas. Veaceslav Ioniţă also added that at least 70-80 percent of these families do not have the financial capacity to assume a tariff of approximately 30 lei for natural gas, even if they will receive compensation from the Government.

The expert proposed capping the rate up to 15 lei, at least up to 150 cubic meters per month, as it was last year. About 3 billion lei would be needed for this. And for the vulnerable categories, the government should also allocate financial aid.
