Christmas, celebrated in several world countries

Orthodox Christians around the world today celebrate Old style Christmas. Thousands of religious people attended religious mess held in Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Serbia, Israel and Egypt, Mesager reports.

Orthodox Christians from all over the world gathered at Bethlehem's Nativity Church to attend the liturgy and celebrate Christmas. The procession was officiated by Patriarch of the Orthodox Church in Jerusalem, Theophilus III.

In Russia, the religious service was officiated by Patriarch Kiril.

Together with thousands of churchgoers, PM Dmitry Medvedev and his wife participated in the religious service. Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Liturgy of St. Petersburg. The Head of the Russian Orthodox Church congratulated the Christians with the Birth of the Lord.

In Bosnia, Herzegovina and Serbia, the  Christmas tree is called Badnjak. It symbolizes the tree of Life that God has planted with his sacred hands in Heaven and it’s also the symbol of the tree with deep roots which was planted in the womb of the Holy Virgin Mary when she gave birth to Jesus.  Badnjak is then brought home where it’s supposed to be burned in the stove at exactly midnight. The Christmas Eve dinner is very important and all of the members of the family are together.

Christmas is also celebrated by Orthodox Christians in Egypt. The largest cathedral in the country was inaugurated the night before. The Christians have been listening to the Christmas service in increased security, as only a few hours ago a team of Cairo sappers died as a result of a bomb explosion they tried to defuse. The explosive had been discovered near a church.
