Explosion in Paris

At least two firefighters have died and another 50 people have been injured since the explosion broke out Saturday morning in a neighborhood in downtown Paris, Reuters reports, quoted by Mediafax.

"While the firefighters were looking for a gas leak in the building, there was an explosion," French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said, adding that one of the firemen was buried under the rubble for several hours.

UPDATE: A strong explosion took place in a bakery in Paris, several people injured and several surrounding windows shattered, the police prefecture and local journalists have said, according to AFP and DPA, quoted by Agerpres. According to the police prefecture, a fire broke out in a store followed by a strong explosion. For now, a gas leak is taken into account to explain the incident, AFP said.

The DPA notes that the Paris authorities are in full alert, because a new protest of yellow vests will be held on Saturday. About 5,000 policemen were deployed in the city.

Protests of yellow jackets began in mid-November, with demonstrations that have frequently degenerated into clashes with law enforcement.
