France, the first country to recommend a single dose of vaccine for people who have had COVID-19
French health authorities on Friday recommended a "single dose" of the COVID-19 vaccine for people "who have already been infected" with the new coronavirus, making France the first country to make the recommendation, reports AFP.
People cured of COVID-19 “have already developed an immune memory during the infection. The single dose of the vaccine will thus act as a booster," the French High Authority for Health (HAS) explained in its recommendation, which must receive government approval.
The authority also recommends waiting "more than three months" after the disease, "preferably six months", before administering this single dose of vaccine.
"So far, no country has clearly positioned itself on a single-dose vaccination for people who contracted COVID-19 before vaccination," HAS said.
In recent days, this solution has been mentioned in several studies conducted in the United States and Italy and which have not yet been evaluated by other scientists.
In addition to the health benefits, the researchers who conducted these studies pointed out that administering a single dose of vaccine to people who have already been infected with COVID could save doses if there are supply problems.
The French government generally follows the recommendations of the High Authority for Health. However, at the end of January, the government estimated that the period between the two doses of Pfizer vaccine could not be extended, contrary to the recommendation issued a few days before the HAS.
