European Parliament requests Romania's accession to the Schengen area
The European Parliament adopted on Tuesday with a wide vote a resolution urging the member states to allow Romania and Bulgaria to join the Schengen area without delay, reads a press release from the institution.
The resolution was adopted with 547 votes for, 49 against and 43 abstentions. It is the fourth resolution in this regard adopted by the European Parliament since Romania's accession to the EU, according to G4media.ro.
The resolutions of the European Parliament are acts that do not produce legal effects, but they give a strong signal to the EU member states.
In the resolution adopted on Tuesday, MEPs state that, by the end of 2022, the Council should take all the necessary measures to adopt the decision on the admission of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area of free movement.
This should ensure the removal of controls on persons at all internal borders for both Member States in the first part of 2023.
The MEPs criticize the fact that the member states have not yet taken a decision regarding the admission of Bulgaria and Romania, although the two countries have met the necessary conditions for a long time. Maintaining internal border controls is discriminatory and has a negative impact on the lives of workers and citizens, according to MEPs. Blocking imports, exports and the free movement of goods from ports also harms the EU's single market.
Currently, all EU member states, with the exception of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland and Romania, are part of the Schengen area. It also includes non-EU states (Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein).
